5th Grade Classroom Economics System
We have adopted a new strategy this year in 5th Grade called Classroom Economics. Students choose and interview for a classroom job that they perform for the length of the quarter. These "classroom jobs" are exactly the classroom jobs that many teachers use within his or her own classroom to keep a well organized and well managed class. The added benefit of receiving a salary and managing a budget with that salary ties in our 5th grade math and social studies goals. The students receive monthly salaries that can increase through extra effort in various areas. This is a great opportunity for students to get involved with mathematics and in the principles of economics, such as the importance of saving money and spending wisely.
Job Title: Custodian
Salary: $550
Description: A custodian is given a specific area of the classroom organized and clean. They are highly paid because an organized classroom is an effective classroom.
Job Title: Banker
Salary: $500
Description: A banker keeps records for four to six students in the class. This student must be good at math and a person of high integrity. The banker takes deposits and checks from the bank customers and coordinates accounts with the other bankers. There are usually five or six bankers for each homeroom class.
Job Title: Tuesday Folder Manager
Salary: $500
Description: These students take care of putting any newsletters or parent information sheets within the Tuesday folders for the week. The student will in charge of making sure each students at the end of Tuesday has his or her red folder on their desk before the end of the day.
Job Title: Messenger
Salary: $525
Description: We usually have two students who handle all errands to other classes or the office. These students must deliver oral messages accurately and know the school staff.
Job Title: Police Officer
Salary: $500
Description: A police officer has several duties. Each one patrols a selected area of the room. The officer has a book with the names of all the students in his jurisdiction. If a student breaks any of the class rules, the officer keeps a record of the infraction. The officer helps me collect all the fines that students pay for breaking the rules.
Job Title: Clerk/Paper Manager
Salary: $550
Description: I usually have about 3 students who are my official clerks. These students pass out and collect papers. They also keep my materials organized and know where everything in my closet is stored.
Job Title: PE Equipment Monitor
Salary: $485
Description: This student takes care of all our PE equipment.
Job Title: Librarian
Salary: $525
Description: Takes care of putting books away and keeping the library area clean.
Job Title: BearMart
Salary: $575
Description: Students will be in charge of keeping up with monthly invoices and inventory for running our 5th Grade Bear Mart class store.
RULES:
Everyone works.
Everyone pays rent on their desks.
Payday is the last Friday of each month in the form of a check.
Students receive checks for checking account, balance sheets.
Bonus Money:
$100 90%-99% on any test
$200 100% on any test
$100 Perfect attendance for the month
$200 Being complimented by another teacher
Police Officers fine students for rules broken
Fines:
$50 Tardy (doubles with each offense)
$50 Missing Homework
$50 Rudeness (not listening when others are speaking)
$100 Messy Desk
$500 Dishonesty
Bonus money and fines are distributed and collected as “cash.”
Purchase of Condos
May purchase desk for 3X monthly rent
Students may also buy other students’ desks and charge them rent
Desk owners pay property taxes every Dec. 10 and April 10
